The officers gave a seminar on the navigation systems on the ship and explained how the route was chosen. Everything from navigational charts, weather, radar, environmental laws (including protected areas), fuel use and timing come into play. I found out on the bridge tour that it's a $700,000 fine if the ship hits and kills a whale in Alaskan waters.
