While we were in Tracy Arm, the Sawyer Glacier "calved" (big chunks of ice broke off and crashed into the water) twice. The captain estimated 150 feet of ice fell the first time.
When the glacier calves it sounds like thunder. The Tlingit First Nation word for glacier is "White Thunder" and it's pretty obvious why when you see and hear the ice break up.
We broke a M.V. Infinity record on this trip they told us -- the captain said he took our 965' long ship within 1.5 cables of the glacier face. That's 330 metres or about one boat length!
